10 most common animal-related complaints and concerns in New Zealand
The SPCA deals with a variety of animal-related complaints and concerns every day. Here are the top 10 most common issues that we see:
1. Dogs being left alone for too long
Dogs are social animals and need companionship. It’s not fair to leave them alone for long periods of time, especially if they’re not used to it. If you’re going to be away from home for more than a few hours, make arrangements for someone to check on your dog or take them for a walk.
2. Dogs being chained up
Chaining up a dog is cruel and inhumane. It restricts their movement, prevents them from socialising and can cause them to become aggressive. If you need to keep your dog contained, build them a proper enclosure or fence.
3. Dogs being abused
Abusing a dog is never okay. If you witness someone abusing a dog, please report it to the SPCA or police immediately.
4. Dogs being neglected
Neglecting a dog is just as bad as abusing them. Dogs need food, water, shelter and exercise. If you’re not able to provide these basic needs, please don’t get a dog.
5. Dogs being left in hot cars
Leaving a dog in a hot car is extremely dangerous and can lead to heat stroke or even death. If you see a dog in a hot car, please call the SPCA or police immediately.
6. Dogs being left in cold cars
Leaving a dog in a cold car is also dangerous and can lead to hypothermia. If you see a dog in a cold car, please bring them inside or call the SPCA.
7. Dogs being left in cars with the windows up
Even if it’s not hot or cold outside, leaving a dog in a car with the windows up is dangerous. Dogs can overheat quickly in enclosed spaces. If you see a dog in a car with the windows up, please roll them down or call the SPCA.
8. Dogs being left in cars with the engines running
Leaving a dog in a car with the engine running is even more dangerous. Dogs can be poisoned by carbon monoxide gas, which is odorless and colorless. If you see a dog in a car with the engine running, please turn it off and call the SPCA.
9. Dogs being left in cars with the windows down
Leaving a dog in a car with the windows down is not enough to keep them cool. Dogs can still overheat, even with the windows down. If you see a dog in a car with the windows down, please bring them inside or call the SPCA.
10. Dogs being left unattended in public places
Dogs should never be left unattended in public places. They can get lost, stolen or hurt. If you can’t take your dog with you, make arrangements for someone to watch them.
